As a core food-contact appliance in kitchens, stainless steel sinks are subject to stringent dual national standards: GB/T 38474 Kitchen Equipment Standard and GB 4806.9 Food Contact Materials Safety Standard. These provide consumers and purchasers with explicit quality reference points.
The GB/T 38474 standard mandates that sinks must contain at least 92% 304/316 stainless steel. It specifies requirements for tensile strength and corrosion resistance (no rust spots after a 48-hour salt spray test) and, for the first time, incorporates anti-condensation coatings into the specification. GB 4806.9, as a mandatory food safety standard, strictly controls the migration levels of harmful elements such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Manufacturers must pass rigorous testing simulating food contact environments at 70°C. National sampling data from 2023 indicates that stainless steel sink products certified under both standards achieved a compliance rate of 98.7%, significantly surpassing the 82.3% rate for non-compliant products. From 2025 onwards, the new national standard will further elevate industry quality thresholds by introducing additional testing requirements for nickel release.
